DOMINIQUE ABEL & FIONA GORDON will be present Wednesday November 9th (7:00PM) and Thursday November 10th (9:30PM).
Belgian filmmakers and actor-couple Dominique Abel and Fiona Gordon opened the Cannes 2011 Director's Fortnight with what critics have called "a deliriously droll confection filled with colourfully anarchistic sightgags", even funnier and better balanced than their delightful dance-comedy RUMBA of 2009. It's a modernistic Keystone Kops romp à la Jacques Tati and Buster Keaton, finding broad yet sophisticated humour in the everyday. With this adult fairytale, the couple's use of colour and choreography combine in unique cartoon-like concept.
Dom is a night-clerk at a small Le Havre hotel, and a succession of unexpected after-midnight visitors keep disturbing his wildly funny sandwich-eating sequence in front of the TV. Enter Fiona claiming to be a fairy able to grant the proverbial 3 wishes, and Dom's first 2 are granted easily and almost immediately. But Dom hasn't decided yet on his 3rd wish perhaps because he's fallen for the fairy herself. Of course, there will be many obstacles in the course of true love, in what is a laugh-loaded semi-absurdist lark. Yet, despite all the fun, there are seriously sly references to current European social injustices.
Watch out also for regular appearances of a perky and patient West Highland Terrier who carries off a very funny parallel plotline. THE FAIRY is a one-of-a-kind movie, "an ingenious whimsical tale" --- don't miss it!
