Cannes 2011 Prix de Jury award-winner POLISS by Maïwenn, shocked audiences with its realism and stupifying intensity, just as the talented young director mesmerized CINEMANIA fans with her semi-autobiographical debut FORGIVE ME in 2007.
Maiwenn brings together an ensemble cast of seasoned actors yet it's the rapper Joey Starr who steals the show in his first major role. The director's masterful cinema-verité style provides a gritty group-portrait of a Child Protection Unit attached to the Paris Police Force. POLISS is a complex work, harrowing yet immensely engaging as the squad deals not only with the stress of their jobs but the inevitable fall-out in their personal lives -- breakdowns, divorce, and adulterous relations within the force. Sexual abuse of minors ranks high among the criminal behaviours and takes it's emotional and psychological toll on the group. In between, there are frequent flashes of humour (as well as anger) and much explicit dialogue as the team attempts to diffuse daily realities.
The multi-talented Maiwenn plays a one-woman Greek chorus, almost mutely bearing witness in the role of on-scene photographer, until she herself enters into a tumultuous and passionate relationship with one of the officers. She coaxes impressively natural performances from her coterie of stars in what is a remarkably compelling film.
