CINEMANIA is truly the destination for Francophone co-production. By a happy accident, exactly 27 feature film co-productions (from a total of 80 premieres) were programmed at this 27th edition of the Festival. First and foremost: MEMORY BOX, shot in Montreal and in Beirut. Also worth mentioning, among so many more: Gessica Généus’ FREDA (Haiti, France, Benin), Valérie Lemercier’s ALINE (France, Québec, Canada), Elie Grappe’s OLGA (Switzerland, France), Emmanuel Marre and Julie Lecoustre’s ZERO FUCKS GIVEN (Belgium, France), Patrick Imbert’s THE SUMMIT OF THE GODS (Luxembourg, France) and Mahamat-Saleh Haroun’s LINGUI, THE SACRED BONDS (Chad, France, Germany, Belgium).
This selection alone highlights the sector’s effervescence. But how is Francophone international film co-production really doing? And where do Québec and Canada fit in this ecosystem, which is sometimes perceived as marginal?
