Japan, 1944. Trained for intelligence work, Hiroo Onoda, 22 years old, discovers a philosophy contrary to the official line: no suicide, stay alive whatever happens, the mission is more important than anything else. Sent to Lubang, a small island in the Philippines where the Americans are about to land, this role will be to wage a guerilla war until the return of the Japanese troops. The Empire will surrender soon after Onoda 10.000 days later.
CINEMANIA’s opinion:
Opening film in the “Un certain regard” section of the Cannes Film Festival 2021, ONODA is an unusual project, one of these “jungle tales” that, despite its many sources of inspiration, does not resemble anything "déjà vu". Arthur Atari, director of DARK DIAMOND (presented at CINEMANIA 2017) delivers his version of the true story of a Japanese man who continued to fight for thirty years after the second world war, juggling between “survival film” and war and adventure story. A surprising “huis clos” with open sky, a story of folly, shot entirely in Cambodia.
